Victorian Liberal MP David Davis said because Premier Daniel Andrews “wouldn’t utter a word against China or utter a word against the Chinese communist party and its imposition of these tariffs”.
Mr Davis said “when it came to it, the ministers balked and would not vote against it” although “they spoke against it in a half-hearted way”.
As a result, the motion was passed unanimously in the upper house.
Sky News host Peter Gleeson said it was a “clever movement” because it had forced the MPs to choose whether their loyalties lay with the Chinese and the Belt and Road project, or with Australian farmers.
