Remarks: President Donald Trump confirmed to reporters this afternoon what Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) quoted him as saying in a meeting today on the shutdown.
“We told the president, we need the government open,” Schumer said today.
“He resisted. In fact, he said he’d keep the government closed for a very long period of time, months or even years.”
M Garrett asked Trump if he said that. “I did,” the President confirmed. “
I don’t think it will, but I am prepared,” Trump continued. “And I think I can speak for Republicans in the House and Republicans in the Senate––they feel very strongly about having a safe country, having a border that makes sense.”
“Well, you know, I appreciate the way you say that, but once — I’m very proud of doing what I’m doing,” Trump replied.
“I don’t call it a shutdown. I call it doing what you have to do for the benefit and for the safety of our country.
When [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said, ‘You don’t have the votes in Congress,’ I will tell you what I was proud of, I was never more proud of my Republican Party and those congressmen and women when they saw that and they got together and they voted 217 to 185 and it wasn’t even close.
That was an incredible day.”
■ President Donald Trump today fight back at freshman congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) for her comments that “we’re going to impeach the m……..r.” Tlaib has stood by her comments so far.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi said today she doesn’t like the language but added it’s no worse than what the President has said.
When asked about her remarks today, Trump first reiterated his earlier comments that you can’t impeach a president who’s doing a great job.
■ But he criticized Tlaib a little more directly as well:
□ “I thought her comments were disgraceful. This is a person that I don’t know, I assume she’s new, I think she dishonoured herself and I think she dishonoured her family. Using language like that in front of her son and whoever else was there––I thought that was a great dishonour to her and her family. I thought it was highly disrespectful to the United States of America.”
■ President Donald Trump claimed today that a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border will stop the rising number of children … since the proposed heavy security measures will deter Central American parents from trying to migrate to America in the first place.
□ “We want to save lives. We want children to be safe,” the president said while speaking to reporters at the White House today.
□ “The children are being decimated, and I’m not talking about necessarily; children in our country. I’m talking about wonderful children that are coming up from other places, whether it’s Honduras or Guatemala or El Salor or Mexico or other places.”
□ “We have to take care of those children also,” he added.
□ “We can’t let them die on the way up.”
■ He continued by mentioning the …. women have faced, before alleging that a wall would put a stop to that since it will cut off migration trails that lead to the U.S.
□ “What’s happening to women on those caravans, you’re not talking about it, but it’s horrible what’s happening,” Trump remarked.
□ “If they know it’s not going to take place because they can’t get through because we have a great border wall or fence or barrier, they’re not going to come up and you’re not going to have the problem.” …
